Moroccan Sahara: The RNI approves its contribution to updating the Autonomy Initiative and welcomes the Royal approach

The Political Bureau of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), meeting in Rabat under the chairmanship of Aziz Akhannouch, has approved the party’s proposal regarding the update of the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative in the Sahara. In this regard, the RNI welcomed the participatory approach led by King Mohammed VI, noting that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 confirms the centrality of the Moroccan proposal as the only credible basis for a final settlement of the conflict.

At the opening of the meeting, the members of the Political Bureau welcomed Resolution 2797 of the Security Council, describing it as an additional step reinforcing the centrality of the Moroccan autonomy project as the only credible, realistic and lasting basis for a definitive settlement of the regional conflict over the Sahara. According to the party, this development confirms the growing international support for Morocco’s efforts and the relevance of the diplomacy led by the Sovereign for over twenty-six years, marked by consistency, strategic vision and credibility.

The RNI also expressed its pride in the participatory approach adopted by the King, highlighting the meeting held on 10 November at the Royal Palace, which underscored the direct involvement of political parties in defending the national cause. According to the Political Bureau, this approach reflects the Royal confidence placed in national competencies and strengthens national unity and internal consensus around the constants of the nation.

The members then followed the presentation of Anis Birou, president of the commission responsible for drafting the party’s proposal. This proposal is based on several references, including Royal speeches, the development model of the Southern Provinces, Security Council resolutions and comparative international experiences.

At the end of the discussions, the final proposal was adopted ahead of its submission for the high appreciation of King Mohammed VI. The document represents a renewed vision, paving the way for tangible prospects for the populations held in Tindouf, guaranteeing their return to the homeland, their participation in local governance and their integration within a united and stable Morocco, in line with the Royal vision.

Beyond its political dimension, the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is intended as a pragmatic solution based on the democratic management of local affairs in the Southern Provinces. It provides for the creation of elected executive, legislative and judicial regional institutions, endowed with broad powers in economic, social, cultural and environmental development. The populations of the Saharan provinces would thus be fully involved in defining regional public policies, under Moroccan sovereignty and in respect of national unity, the Constitution and the symbols of the State.

The autonomy project also grants a central role to human development in the Southern Provinces, drawing on the structural investments carried out in recent years in the region: ports, road networks, logistics hubs, industrial projects and social programs. The objective, regularly recalled by the Sovereign, is to ensure lasting economic opportunities for local populations, to offer the youth a stable future and to provide a dignified prospect of reconciliation and return for Moroccans held in Tindouf.
