Alert in Ksar El Kébir: Near-Total Evacuation of Population Amid Unprecedented Flood Risk
The city of Ksar El Kébir is facing a situation of exceptional severity. Confronted with persistent torrential rains and a high risk of flooding, the authorities have launched a near-total evacuation of the population, placing the city under maximum alert.
For several days, the rapid rise of the Oued Loukkos waters, combined with the critical saturation of the Oued El Makhazine dam, has led to an unprecedented mobilization of both civil and military authorities. The evacuation perimeter has been progressively extended to include nine neighborhoods, including areas previously considered safe.
According to official figures, more than 54,000 residents have already been relocated to other cities, including Tangier, Larache, Tétouan, Fnideq, and Assilah. Dozens of buses have been mobilized to ensure the rapid evacuation of families, often carried out at night, in a true race against time.
A new level of concern was reached with the evacuation of a shelter located on the Tatoft road, despite being situated on one of the highest points in the city. Residents were relocated as a precaution to Fnideq, as authorities feared that the upcoming floods could also affect this area. This decision has heightened anxiety among the population, reflecting the rapid deterioration of the situation.
Meteorologically, northern Morocco is experiencing a rare intense rainfall episode, fueled by major atmospheric disturbances. The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a red alert, warning that heavy precipitation over short periods could trigger sudden floods and localized inundations.
In response to this threat, the authorities are urging residents to strictly follow evacuation instructions, avoid low-lying areas, and remain in contact.
