HRC: Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights, Social Reforms

Geneva - Morocco reaffirmed on Tuesday in Geneva its unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, highlighting major reforms spearheaded at the highest level of the State, during the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC).

Speaking on behalf of the Kingdom under Item 2 of the general debate, Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, thanked the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for his oral update. He also emphasized the significant progress made by Morocco, notably through the new national strategy to reduce territorial inequalities, announced on July 30 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

This ambitious initiative aims to correct persistent social imbalances and ensure a fairer distribution of opportunities and resources, the diplomat explained.

It builds on the New Development Model, which has already enabled significant progress, particularly through the generalization of social and health protection, now covering the entire Moroccan population, he added.

On the multilateral front, Morocco is actively engaged in combating child labor, organizing next February a global conference on this issue in close cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO), Zniber noted, calling on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN mechanisms to play an active role in its preparation to ensure impact and results.

As part of its renewed support for multilateral processes, particularly those relating to human rights, Morocco provides “constant support, including financial,” for efforts in this field, notably through hosting initiatives and constructive engagement with treaty bodies and special procedures, he added.

The diplomat also voiced the Kingdom’s commitment to supporting efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), announcing ongoing reflections on new proposals with the relevant parties.
