CAF’s awkward silence over refereeing controversy: Patrice Motsepe remains evasive and avoids answering

The controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final continues to spark strong reactions, and Patrice Motsepe’s recent remarks have only deepened the questions. Asked during a press conference about a possible intervention by the head of the refereeing commission, Olivier Savary, the CAF president did not provide a direct answer.

Instead of clearly denying the allegations — particularly those suggesting that instructions may have been given to the referee regarding yellow cards — Motsepe chose to pass the floor to his Secretary General, a move that did not go unnoticed.

CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu limited himself to stating that the governing body is following an ongoing procedure, without confirming or denying the claims. This cautious communication, focused on respecting disciplinary processes, has left uncertainty hanging and fueled speculation about possible influence over refereeing decisions.

The issue is especially sensitive as it concerns the final of the 2025 AFCON between Morocco and Senegal, already marked by significant tensions. Statements attributed to Olivier Savary — claiming he had asked the referee not to sanction certain Senegalese players who left the pitch — have further intensified the debate in recent days.

After a stop in Senegal, Patrice Motsepe spoke in Morocco but did not provide the expected clarifications. This silence, perceived by some as evasive, continues to drive discussions, particularly on social media.

While awaiting a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the case remains open and is likely to continue generating debate.
