Amman: Arab League Council Resumes Its 165th Ministerial Session with Morocco’s Participation

The proceedings of the 165th Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level resumed on Monday in Amman, with the participation of Morocco.

The Moroccan delegation attending the meeting is headed by Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

The delegation also includes Morocco’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the Arab League, Mr. Mohamed Aït Ouali, Morocco’s Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Fouad Akhrif, Director of Maghreb, Arab and Islamic Affairs at the Ministry, Mr. Khalid Bencheikh, and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the Arab League, Mr. Hicham Ould Essalay.

The resumed session follows the work of the 165th Ordinary Session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, which was held by videoconference on March 29 under the chairmanship of the Bahrain.

During the meeting, Arab foreign ministers are expected to examine a number of Arab and regional issues on the agenda, as well as the latest developments in the region and ways to coordinate Arab positions on matters of common interest, with a view to strengthening joint Arab action and addressing the challenges facing the region.

The meeting is also expected to consider a key item concerning the approval of the appointment of Mr. Nabil Fahmy, former Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Secretary-General of the Arab League.

Fahmy is scheduled to officially assume office at the beginning of next July, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term expires at the end of the current month. Participants will also review the appointment of several heads of Arab League missions abroad.

Prior to the opening of the session, Arab foreign ministers held a closed consultative meeting at the invitation of Mr. Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, to discuss and coordinate positions on the various sensitive issues and files included on the agenda.
