Shameful: Algerian Player Baghdad Bounedjah Provokes Moroccan Fans with Obscene Words and Gestures
Algeria’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after their victory over Congo could have been celebrated on the field of sport. Instead, it was tainted by an obscene and indefensible act by Baghdad Bounedjah, who, whether intentionally or not, became the symbol of a completely derailed Algerian football, reflecting the military regime that protects and exploits it.

As soon as the final whistle blew, the Algerian forward turned to the stands and made a sexually explicit gesture toward the public. The act was filmed, widely circulated, and strongly condemned. It was an exceptionally vulgar gesture, unworthy of an international player, and above all, a blatant expression of contempt for the supporters, the opponent, and the very values of African football.
This behavior is not an isolated incident. It is part of a broader pattern: football held hostage by a crumbling Algerian military regime that exports its culture of constant aggression, disregard for others, and systemic impunity onto the pitch.
A regime reflected in its players:
For years, the Algerian authorities have used sport as a political showcase while turning a blind eye to the misbehavior of their representatives. On the field, this creates players who confuse competition with provocation, victory with humiliation, and sporting rivalry with deliberate vulgarity.
By committing this indecent act, Bounedjah did not just cross a disciplinary red line. He exposed in full view the moral collapse of a football culture that believes it can do anything because it knows it is protected.
CAF faces a credibility test:
The Confederation of African Football rules are clear. Article 147 penalizes any provocation toward the public with a suspension of up to three matches and a heavy fine. If CAF chooses blindness or complacency, it will send a disastrous message: that the organization cannot enforce its own rules under political pressure.
Sanctioning Baghdad Bounedjah is a minimum requirement to protect the image of a CAN organized with seriousness by Morocco and to remind everyone that African football cannot become a stage for the excesses of a desperate regime. By confusing arrogance with greatness, Algerian football only confirms its moral isolation, mirroring a political power that is collapsing and survives only through provocation.
