CAF Verdict: An Incomprehensible Decision That Undermines Discipline in African Football

The decision delivered by the CAF Disciplinary Committee following the incidents that occurred during the 2025 AFCON final continues to provoke confusion and indignation among many observers of African football. By imposing sanctions widely considered insufficient on the Senegalese Football Federation, despite the seriousness of the incidents in question, the continental body is sending a worrying signal about the future of the competition and the credibility of its regulations.

The most controversial issue remains the withdrawal of the Senegalese team from the pitch for more than 17 minutes, a highly unusual occurrence in a continental final that could have led to the match being abandoned altogether. In any major competition, such an act constitutes a serious breach of sporting order and could result in heavy sanctions, including forfeiture of the match.

Instead, CAF opted for financial penalties and individual suspensions viewed as modest in light of the scale of the events. For many observers, this decision gives the impression of leniency that weakens the very principle of sporting discipline.
