Tribute to Prince Moulay Hafid Alaoui: 11 years on, the intact memory of a great physician and humanist

It has now been eleven years since we had to bid farewell to Prince Moulay Hafid Alaoui.

Eleven years ago, Morocco lost an exceptional figure: Prince Moulay Hafid, an eminent physician and a humanist deeply attached to the values of his country and to the nobility of his vocation.

A renowned internist, he left a lasting mark on the medical world through his professionalism, his scientific rigor and, above all, his sincere compassion toward his patients. His human and medical legacy continues, even today, to inspire his colleagues and all those who knew him.

The late Prince Moulay Hafid Alaoui was the son of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Abdellah, grandson of His Majesty Sultan Moulay Hafid and great grandson of Sultan Hassan I. He was born on Tuesday, December 30, 1941 in Fez, the city where he passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at the age of 74.

After his primary studies at the Douh School, located in Sidi Lkhayyat in Fez, he pursued his secondary education at the Lyautey High School in Casablanca, a prestigious institution that trained many Moroccan and French personalities. He then joined the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, created in 1962 by the late His Majesty King Hassan II and affiliated with Mohammed V University.

On April 1, 1972, he defended his doctoral thesis in medicine on the topic: “Contribution to the study of gelatinous disease of the peritoneum (about three cases)”.

Throughout his career, he supported with commitment and dedication the development of Ibn Al Khatib Hospital in Fez as well as Al Ghassani Hospital, leaving behind colleagues who were grateful and deeply marked by his journey.

Appreciated for his great human qualities, his unwavering attachment to the constants of the nation and his loyalty to the glorious Alaouite Throne, Prince Moulay Hafid Alaoui remains a model of honesty, simplicity, generosity, integrity and authenticity.
