AFCON 2025: The Foreign Exchange Office Deploys a Comprehensive Visitor Support System
Just days before the kickoff of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025), scheduled for December 21, the Foreign Exchange Office has introduced a set of measures aimed at supporting the reception of foreign visitors and Moroccans Living Abroad (MREs), in a context marked by a significant influx of supporters and increased requirements in terms of transaction fluidity, security and transparency in foreign exchange operations.
This mobilization is part of a comprehensive approach designed to facilitate access to foreign exchange services, modernize existing practices and guarantee clear and accessible information for visitors as soon as they arrive on national territory, the Office stated in a press release.
Thus, it reflects the Foreign Exchange Office’s determination to anticipate the challenges linked to a major continental event and to adapt its system to international standards in terms of reception and financial services, the statement added.
At the operational level, the Foreign Exchange Office has introduced facilitation measures intended to improve the conditions under which foreign exchange transactions are carried out. These developments allow for greater diversification of payment methods used in currency exchange operations, strengthening both transaction fluidity and security. They respond to the expectations of international travelers, who are increasingly accustomed to using electronic and dematerialized payment solutions.
Alongside these operational adjustments, the Foreign Exchange Office has placed particular emphasis on the informational and educational component. A multichannel communication system has therefore been deployed in order to provide visitors with reliable, understandable and immediately accessible information.
This includes, in particular, a dedicated page on the official website of the Foreign Exchange Office (www.oc.gov.ma), bringing together all information relating to applicable foreign exchange regulations, available facilities and good practices to observe during a stay in Morocco.
Multilingual communication materials, in Arabic, French and English, have also been designed and distributed at the Kingdom’s main airports. These materials aim to explain in a simple manner currency exchange procedures, currency declaration obligations and available services, thereby helping to guide visitors and strengthen transparency within the system.
Beyond improving the user experience, this approach is also part of compliance and vigilance requirements in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
The measures implemented by the Foreign Exchange Office are notably aligned with international standards in this area, particularly the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), while ensuring a balance is maintained between facilitating transactions and risk management.
By strengthening operational mechanisms, information tools and the compliance framework at the same time, the Foreign Exchange Office affirms its central role in supporting major international events hosted by the Kingdom.
This mobilization also contributes to efforts to modernize the national payments ecosystem, by encouraging greater use of electronic payment methods and reducing dependence on cash.
Through this comprehensive system, the Foreign Exchange Office reaffirms its commitment to supporting the smooth running of AFCON 2025, ensuring a climate of confidence for visitors, and contributing to the enhancement of Morocco’s image as a welcoming, modern country that complies with international best practices.
