Nasser Bourita: Morocco-Ecuador relations entering “a new era of fruitful cooperation” driven by strong momentum

At a press conference in Rabat, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said on Friday that relations between Morocco and Ecuador are entering “a new era of fruitful cooperation,” marked by particularly strong momentum.

Speaking alongside Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility Gabriela Sommerfeld following their talks, Bourita said this positive development reflects the shared vision of King Mohammed VI and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa to elevate bilateral ties to a higher level.

The minister recalled that Ecuador’s decision two years ago to withdraw its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi republic,” followed by the signing of a bilateral roadmap, marked a decisive turning point that opened the way for cooperation based on mutual trust and shared interests.

As part of this momentum, Bourita announced the upcoming opening of a Moroccan embassy in Quito, scheduled for September, in response to Ecuador’s recent establishment of a diplomatic mission in Rabat, thereby strengthening both countries’ presence on each other’s territory.

Describing Ecuador as a strategic partner in Latin America, Bourita praised its consistent support for Morocco in various international forums. He also highlighted Sommerfeld’s active role in the evolution of positions taken by certain countries in the region regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue.

On the economic front, the minister said the two countries are preparing to sign an agreement creating a joint commission tasked with boosting trade exchanges and establishing a favorable legal framework for investment, particularly through investment protection measures and the avoidance of double taxation.

Finally, the two nations aim to strengthen coordination within international organizations and initiatives focused on security and stability, illustrating a growing convergence of views on global issues.
