Wasit International Film Festival celebrates intercultural dialogue and welcomes a renowned Moroccan expert

Iraq is preparing to once again resonate to the rhythm of cinema with the holding, in 2026, of the 11th edition of the Wasit International Short Film Festival. Held under the evocative theme “Cinema, the culture of peoples”, this edition is shaping up to be a major event on the Arab and international cinematic scene, highlighting the seventh art as a powerful vehicle for dialogue, memory and rapprochement between nations.

The official selection, unveiled in January 2026, reflects the vitality and diversity of contemporary creation. No fewer than 17 short films have been selected for the official competition, joined by four additional works presented outside the competition, notably through digital platforms. Films from several Arab and foreign countries illustrate the richness of perspectives and aesthetics brought together for the Wasit festival.

This edition is also marked by the notable presence of Dr Sahli Belkacem, a prominent Moroccan figure from the academic and media worlds, invited to sit on the festival’s official jury. Educational director of the Higher Institute of Journalism and Communication (ISJC) in Casablanca, Dr Belkacem embodies recognized expertise in journalism, communication and cultural analysis. His participation gives this edition a high-level intellectual and professional dimension, while strengthening cultural bridges between Morocco and Iraq.

Through this choice, the Wasit Festival confirms its commitment to opening up to international expertise and promoting South-South exchanges, relying on profiles capable of approaching cinema not only as an artistic work, but also as a universal language carrying meaning and human values.

Since its creation, the Wasit International Film Festival has established itself as an essential platform for young filmmakers, encouraging the emergence of new voices and the circulation of works beyond borders. By highlighting the short film, a demanding and highly creative format, the event actively contributes to regional and international cultural dynamics.

The 11th edition therefore promises to be a strong moment of celebration of cinema, cultural diversity and dialogue between peoples, driven by an ambitious programme and the participation of committed personalities such as Dr Sahli Belkacem, whose presence honours the festival and reflects the growing influence of Moroccan expertise on the international cultural stage.
