50 Years On, the Green March Continues Its Path: Morocco Celebrates Its Unity, Recognized and Upheld by the International Community

This Thursday, November 6, 2025, Morocco will proudly and patriotically celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Green March, the historic movement launched by the late His Majesty King Hassan II, which still resonates half a century later as an eternal symbol of a people united behind their King in defense of the nation’s territorial integrity.

This fiftieth anniversary comes in an exceptional context, marked by the adoption at the United Nations headquarters in New York of Security Council Resolution 2797. This historic resolution reaffirms the preeminence of the Autonomy Plan under Moroccan sovereignty, presented by the Kingdom in 2007 and now recognized by the international community as the only serious, credible, and realistic basis for a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Thus, the Green March, which in 1975 saw 350,000 peaceful volunteers armed only with their faith and their flag, continues today in the world’s diplomatic and institutional arenas. Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the visionary heir to the Alaouite Throne, Morocco has transformed the oath of the Green March into a long-term strategy of development, stability, and peace, embodied by the irreversible momentum of the Southern Provinces.

The continuous efforts of Moroccan diplomacy, inspired by the Royal vision, have anchored a new reality: that of a prosperous Moroccan Sahara, forward-looking and dynamic, and of a Kingdom respected and trusted as a key partner in regional stability. The growing international recognition — confirmed by major powers and numerous African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American states — attests to the effectiveness of a policy rooted in historical legitimacy, clarity in diplomacy, and peaceful cooperation.

On this memorable day, Morocco celebrates two victories: that of remembrance and that of diplomacy. The first recalls the enduring bond between the Throne and the people; the second confirms that the wisdom of the Kingdom, embodied by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has prevailed over adversarial illusions and maneuvers.

In Laayoune, Dakhla, Smara, and Boujdour, residents are living the tangible results of this loyalty: roads, universities, ports, industrial zones, and major development projects are turning the Moroccan Sahara into a continental hub of growth and opportunity.

Fifty years later, the Green March is no longer only a heroic memory; it is a promise fulfilled, a vision realized, and a universal message of peace and unity. Beneath the red flag emblazoned with the green star, Morocco advances with confidence and pride, faithful to its history and resolutely looking toward its future.

The March goes on.
