Al Arjat 1 Prison Refutes “Le Monde” Claims Over Detention Conditions of Ibtissam Lachgar

The administration of Al Arjat 1 local prison has strongly responded to reports published by the French daily Le Monde regarding the detention conditions and health status of inmate Ibtissam Lachgar, who has been held at the facility since August 12, 2025.

In a statement, the prison administration denounced what it described as “unfounded allegations,” asserting that the situation of the detainee does not reflect the portrayal presented by the French newspaper.

In its article, Le Monde had referred to allegedly difficult detention conditions, highlighting what it described as the inmate’s isolation and a deterioration in her health. The newspaper also mentioned limited access to medical care and an environment deemed unsuitable for her medical condition.

Moroccan prison authorities firmly rejected these claims, noting that, as previously clarified in a statement dated March 2, 2026, the detainee shares a cell with three other inmates under conditions that meet sanitary standards, including beds, blankets, ventilation, sanitary facilities and a television.

According to the Al Arjat 1 administration, she benefits from regular group walks, activities, family visits and phone communications with relatives. It also emphasized that she was granted special authorization to receive a visit from a friend.

Regarding medical care, which is central to the allegations raised by Le Monde, authorities stated that the detainee’s health condition is “normal and stable” and has not deteriorated.

She has undergone 13 medical consultations within the facility and 8 specialized external consultations in orthopedic surgery. A surgical procedure was recommended but declined by the detainee herself in writing.

The administration also indicated that she follows a diet adapted to her digestive condition and has an upcoming appointment with an external specialist. On a psychological level, she has been examined at a specialized facility and is receiving medical treatment provided by the prison administration.
