Moroccan Sahara: Two NGOs Welcome UN Security Council Resolution 2797 as a Significant Step Toward a Final Settlement

Two NGOs welcomed on Monday, during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the historic Resolution 2797 of the United Nations Security Council, which enshrines the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for achieving a final settlement of the regional dispute created around the Moroccan Sahara, describing the resolution as a significant step toward a definitive solution.

Speaking on behalf of OCAPROCE International during the general debate of the 61st session, Ms. Saadani Maolainain considered that the adoption of Resolution 2797 comes at a crucial moment in a dispute that has lasted nearly half a century and has caused suffering and deprivation for the Sahrawi populations held in the Tindouf camps in southwestern Algeria.

This former Sahrawi deportee to Cuba stressed that the autonomy plan presented by Morocco constitutes the only viable, fair and realistic solution capable of guaranteeing all political, economic and social rights within the framework of comprehensive reconciliation, under Moroccan sovereignty and in accordance with United Nations principles.

Also speaking under the agenda item devoted to the debate on the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Gajmoula Boussif emphasized that the effective promotion of human rights requires a stable institutional framework guaranteeing access to justice and public services.

The activist also welcomed Morocco’s efforts in socio-economic development and cooperation with the international human rights system, considering that a lasting settlement is likely to guarantee the full enjoyment of fundamental rights for all concerned populations, including those living in the Tindouf camps.
