Morocco, Rwanda Ink Air Transport Agreement

Montreal - An air transport agreement between Morocco and Rwanda was signed, Thursday in Montreal, on the sidelines of the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Inked at ICAO headquarters by Morocco’s minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, and Rwandan ambassador to Canada, Higiro Prosper, the agreement is aimed at reinforcing cooperation in international air transport between the two countries.

On this occasion, the two sides discussed the means to step up bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in areas related to aviation safety in order to ensure the highest levels of safety and security in international air transport, in addition to strengthening coordination within regional and international forums.

This agreement, whose signing ceremony took place in the presence of Moroccan ambassador to Ottawa, Souriya Otmani, demonstrates the commitment of both countries to strengthening Africa’s presence in the area of international civil aviation, in line with Morocco’s vision which seeks to position the Kingdom as a regional hub connecting Africa to the rest of the continent and promote African integration within the air transport sector.

The signing of this agreement is part of the implementation of the policy initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which is aimed at connecting the Kingdom to African countries by air by encouraging the opening of new routes, Mr. Kayouh told reporters.

The minister recalled in this regard that the national flag carrier “Royal Air Maroc” serves nearly 27 African countries every day with a frequency of 600 flights per week.

These efforts are also part of the ministry’s strategy, which aims to double the number of passengers from the current 40 million to 80 million by 2030, said Mr. Kayouh, who leads the Moroccan delegation to the ICAO assembly.

For his part, Mr. Prosper welcomed the signing of this agreement, which, he said, shows the excellent relations between the two countries.

The air service agreement will “develop our respective aviation sectors” and open new prospects for cooperation between the two countries in several areas of the civil aviation sector, the diplomat added.

The Kingdom’s participation in the ICAO Assembly demonstrates its ongoing commitment to the sustainable development and security of civil aviation, as well as its willingness to contribute to strengthening international cooperation in this strategic area, said the ministry of Transport and Logistics in a release.

During this assembly, the Kingdom will defend its bid for membership in the ICAO Council, thus reaffirming its willingness to play an active and constructive role in global civil aviation governance.

On the sidelines of this event, the Moroccan delegation is holding a series of bilateral meetings with officials from other countries as well as with representatives of several international organizations, with the aim of strengthening technical and operational cooperation in the various areas of civil aviation.

The ICAO Assembly is the Organization’s sovereign body. It meets at least once every three years and is convened by the organization’s governing body, the Council.
