The United States Reaffirms Its Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara and Hails the Strategic Partnership with the Kingdom

During a meeting held in New York between U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Mr. Landau and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, the United States once again reiterated its firm position in favor of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara.

As clearly emphasized by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Washington recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and considers the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom as the only credible and realistic basis for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution. The United States also calls on all parties concerned to resume negotiations without delay under the auspices of the United Nations, in order to consolidate regional peace conducive to prosperity and stability.

During this meeting, Deputy Secretary of State Landau highlighted the strength and depth of the historic partnership uniting Rabat and Washington, affirming that the United States will continue to support American companies wishing to invest and expand their activities in all regions of the Kingdom, including in the Moroccan Sahara.

This declaration illustrates not only the consistency of the U.S. position since the official recognition, in December 2020, of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, but also the shared determination to open new economic and strategic horizons for the benefit of both nations.

Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to affirm its role as a key U.S. partner in promoting security, peace and sustainable development, both in Africa and across the Euro-Mediterranean space.
