Rabat: Moncef Marzouki Reaffirms the Need to Revive the Maghreb Union and Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara
Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki reaffirmed Friday in Rabat the need to relaunch the Maghreb Union, adding that maintaining the current situation “comes at a high cost for the region”.
Speaking at a conference organized by the Front of Democratic Forces (FFD) under the theme “What prospects for reviving the Maghreb Union project?”, Mr. Marzouki stated that “keeping the region as the last non-integrated space has a high cost, now known to all”.
In this regard, he called on Maghreb civil society to fully assume its role in strengthening the values of the Union and enhancing its development prospects, emphasizing in particular the need to reinforce freedom of movement and employment.
He also highlighted the role of Maghreb parliaments in shaping this vision, describing it as a key step toward building an integrated Maghreb space.
Moreover, Mr. Marzouki welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara, describing it as the result of the tireless efforts of Moroccan diplomacy to reaffirm the legitimacy of this cause.
For his part, the Secretary General of the FFD, Mustapha Benali, underlined the importance of this meeting, which marks the start of the third session of a cycle of seminars organized by the party on Morocco’s relations with its regional neighbors.
Speaking to MAP, he said that the presence of the former President of the Republic of Tunisia held particular significance, given his ongoing commitment to revitalizing the Arab Maghreb Union.
The conference was attended by political figures, diplomats, human rights advocates, as well as members of the FFD’s Political Bureau and National Council.
